FERRAMENTA

Gleichzeitig stellen kleine ‘hardware shops’ einen wichtigen lokalen Bezug her.

FERRAMENTA

The Ferramenta is a distinctive feature of everyday Italian culture. Elsewhere too, small hardware and household shops are, or have been, places where a wide variety of simple, functional items have traditionally been offered: tools, fittings, household goods, storage solutions, cleaning utensils, spare parts, and products for repair and maintenance.

Many of these items were not intended as design objects. Rather, their design arose from the materials, their function, the manufacturing process, and the need for durability. They were robust, straightforward, and often remained virtually unchanged for decades.

At the same time, small hardware shops establish an important local connection. They reflect neighbourhood-specific needs and are often treasure troves of ‘new-old-stock’—products that have been in stock for a long time. They offer problem-solving on the spot, rather than the DIY store on the outskirts of town.

In the coming winter term, we want to explore this endangered retail sector from a cultural perspective. How can we understand a contemporary ‘Ferramenta’ as an element of urban community, conceive utilitarian products in a sustainable way, and create relevant objects that solve problems elegantly and simply?

This is not about copying historical products or designing nostalgic objects. Rather, the aim is to explore which qualities of the traditional Ferramenta are still relevant today—and how these can be used to create new products for everyday life.

Joining us on this project are design researcher Liliana Ovalle and special guest Michael Marriott from London.

The aim is to showcase our new Ferramenta in a shop window display next spring.
