NEGOTIATINGSPACE – JACOB QUATEMBER

Negotiating Space – As intelligent systems increasingly become active participants in our physical environments, this project explores how humans and AI negotiate shared space rather than simply shaping it independently.

The installation begins with a carefully prepared sand surface. Before every interaction, the robot smooths and structures the landscape, establishing its own initial state before the human intervenes. The human then places stones, introducing new intentions for how the landscape should evolve. Rather than simply executing these interventions, the robot interprets them according to its own embedded principles. It draws around the stones, creates relationships between them, occasionally introduces new stones of its own and, when necessary, repositions existing ones. Through these actions, the robot becomes an active participant rather than an executing tool.

The human contributes intuition, vision and subjective decision-making, while the robot contributes an understanding of relationships and consequences. Through an alternating dialogue, both continuously negotiate the evolving landscape.
