We are happy to announce our new research-in-teaching project:

The Designing_AI Lab combines research and design studio culture.
AI is much more than chat. It’s implications range from how we learn, teach, design and research to robotics, production systems, and how we interact with each other and our information ecologies. But we rarely perceive these changes as something that can be actively designed rather than predefined technological developments.

Our approach integrates structured design courses with experimental practice, allowing students to engage with exactly these open questions in human–AI interaction.
Each semester, students will develop tools, artifacts, methods, and prototypes that contribute directly to their ongoing research. Through this process, both designing and making serve as ways to explore and understand complex research questions.

Emphasis is placed on small and diverse studio groups. Students from different product design backgrounds are welcome to collaborate closely, bringing multiple perspectives to the creative process. It will act as a catalyst of the documentation and transmission of collaboratively gathered knowledge. students will participate in peer-teaching activities by designing workshops and tutorials. Teaching is therefore actively co-shaped by all studio members. The lab welcomes participants from all backgrounds, that value openness and are excited to engage critically with design challenges through research-informed practice.

Providing a platform for exploration, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing, the Designing_AI Lab will bring together students, researchers, and visiting experts to engage with open questions in human-AI interaction at the University of the Arts Berlin.
